Attendance down at YF&R Luau, but still a success

“The luau definitely saw less of an attendance this year, but still managed to raise a decent amount of money for YF&R,” said Amaral. She added that other Ag related events held on the same evening, as well as soaring temperatures—more than 100 degrees—may have kept some away.

The luau typically serves as a way to recap the year in review for the organization—and the recent success of Stanislaus YF&R, gave plenty to highlight.

“YF&R has had a really great year actually,” said YF&R Chair, Jeff Wenger. “Up at the state level we participated in three contests; the discussion meet, Agribusiness Person of the Year, and Young Farmer of the Year. Stanislaus County was able to sweep all three of the contests, and was also named Outstanding Committee of the Year, so we’re very proud of all of that.”

Assemblyman Bill Berryhill, whose family generously donates use of the island for the luau each year, said he appreciates people supporting the organization.

“This is a great organization that Stanislaus County has, and it has a great history here” said Berryhill. “It goes back a long ways, even back to when Tom and I were in Young Farmer’s and Ranchers.”

Funds from the event, which serves as one of only two YF&R fundraiser for the entire year, will go to a variety of things throughout the next year including, scholarships and social events, like an annual bus trip to a San Francisco Giants game, meetings, and the national YF&R convention.“The luau definitely saw less of an attendance this year, but still managed to raise a decent amount of money for YF&R,” said Amaral.
